El Teniente

The Teniente division, began exploitation activities in 1904, and is located eighty kilometers South of Santiago and 2,500 meters above the sea level, focuses its operations in the exploitation of the underground copper mine, which is the largest of its kind in the World, with more than 2,400 kilometers of underground drifts.

El Teniente produces more than 400,000 metric tons of fine copper per year as fire refined lingots (RAF), and copper cathodes.

Micomo is providing to this division, information services to monitor the geomechanic deformations and photonic communication services to connect the different units related to productive processes.

The benefits for operations and safety as a result of the accurate (millimetric scale) online deformations measurement for massif structures, and simultaneous for hundreds of points from a remote room, encourage Micomo to apply and develop an Innova-Corfo Consortium with Codelco and NTT. This alliance was conceived to test and validate the basis to provide a monitoring and forecast service for geomechanic deformations. Today, is possible to know what, where and how big are the deformations in Diablo Regimiento and Reservas Norte Pillars, fortification bolt, Falla principal and Camara de Chancado, through a networked system that allows the visualization of the information from Santiago or any location within Codelco’s network.

In addition, in order to strengthen the backbone network for this division, Micomo is in the stage to start up communications services, increasing the speed and broadband capacity between Rancagua, Colón, Caletones, Pillar Norte, and Mine through fiber optic links connected to high-speed NTT’s photonic equipment.
